At midnight last night I looked out the window at the lilacs and irises and wild geranium that adorn our new yard, astounded, yet again, by the light.
The sun rose this morning at 4:21 and sets at 11:42 pm. The longest day of our short summer, a time when it never grows darker than dusk.
Elias sleeps easily, even with the bright sunshine. Olive doesn't sleep, but I can't blame her restlessness on the constant daylight. I'm not sure why she wakes so often in the night but it sure is easier to rise when I can see across the room without turning on a light.
And today, with a canopy of endless blue skies after a week of steel-gray, the air awash with the sweet smell of lilac blooms and wild roses, and gardens galore to dig my hands into, to pull clover and chickweed and dandelions, sleep seems superfluous anyways.
oh sweet summer! I feel the same way and we are only getting about 1/2 that amount of sunlight! soak it all up now right? enjoy. XoX.

Christy,
I remember when I was a girl growing up in Palmer, Alaska, planting flowers with my mom. It must have been one of these longer days in June with weather such as we have had today. We were planting away and mom asked me to go inside and check what time it was. I came out and stood on the concrete steps leading outside just incredulous. "Mom," I yelled, "It is midnight."

love this story Valerie, I can see the look of wonder on your young face.
My parents love to talk about the time they flew here in June late at night and our neighbor was out washing his car with a toddler in diapers long past midnight.
The light makes us all a little wild:)
