But Writer's Interruption.
Also known as kids.
Or more specifically going from one child to two, and living with a six-month old who rarely sleeps and a six-year old who rarely stops asking questions, letting me know in his own way, "Mooooommmm, I need your tention."
That would be Attention with a capital A.
"What are you doing Mommy?"
"Where's Mommy?"
"What's this?"
"When are we going for a walk?"
"What day is today?"
"What flower is that?"
"Can I type my name?"
"Is it time to go yet?"
"When is it time to go?"
"Where are you going Mommy?"
(I've taken to locking myself in the bathroom at times just to guarantee a few minutes without little hands and mouths that need me.)
"It won't always be like this," Nick said as we sat on the couch last night talking about how much attention our children demand.
Someday they'll want space too.
And I know I'll miss the days when they both fit on my lap, Olive soft like bread, Elias all sharp angles and bones, both wriggling, both needing me now.
Now!!!!
I've gotten up three times since I started this post to respond to Olive, once to move her back towards her toys after she crept off the carpet towards the desk, once to pick her up when she fell over from sitting and grazed her head on some blocks, and once to clean up yet another pile of spit-up.
And now she's starting to shriek.
I just have to remind myself that my time to write waits for me ahead, it may be more of a mirage these days then an actual island of uninterrupted thought time, but its there in the distance and, someday, I'll claim it as my own. Until then I'll find time when I can, between diaper changes and outside time, amidst nursing and responding and holding little warm bodies that somehow came out of mine.
We are off to Seward till Tuesday, so if you don't hear from me for awhile know that I'm also being interrupted by the beauty of a place, a different kind of island, away from the To Do lists from home, the siren calls of the city, our oasis of mountains, water, and woods, that more than anything, helps me respond to my children with a touch more grace.
Ah yes. Writer's Interruption. I am all too familiar with that one. Sigh.

My husband shared with me a quote from a mother about life with kids, and it is SO true: "The days are long, but the years are short."
Enjoy your trip!
